Experience Nutridge Luau on Oahu

A luau is a Hawaiian celebration which is usually accompanied by dancing, entertainment, and of course, food. If it’s your first time in Hawaii, a luau is a must as you can learn more about Hawaiian culture through stories, food, and dance. There are many luau options to choose from. Some hotels even offer a luau on property for an additional cost. Definitely find that that fits your needs and wants to really get your money’s worth. Below, I’ll go through the reasons on why I think the Experience Nutridge luau is one that should be on the top of your list of activities on Oahu.

Why Choose Experience Nutridge Luau

Occupancy:

  • Experience Nutridge was a complete gem and currently my number one recommendation for a luau for so many reasons. First, is the luau occupancy. On the island of Oahu, there are countless options to choose from. Usually with luaus, there can be 100-200 or more people per night! However, at Experience Nutridge, there are usually 30-70 people. This creates such an intimate setting that you won’t get anywhere else. You get to interact with the entertainers and are able to be closer to the entertainment since there are less people.

Food and Drink:

  • Here, you’ll get authentic Hawaiian foods such as Lau Lau, Kalua pork, Pulehu chicken, haupia (coconut) dessert, and more. Everything was prepared fresh on site, the food was hot, and the drinks were cold. I could have gone back for more plates all night.

  • You are given a choice of an adult drink (and water) right as you enter the estate and sit down for the first session of the night. After all the events and scheduled sessions, you’ll have some downtime where you’ll have access to the bar. Two drinks are included from a preset list with your admission. Additional drinks can be purchased from the bar. There are great non-alcoholic options as well.

Entertainment:

  • The key to any great event or experience is a great host. Our host for the evening really made us feel welcomed and relaxed with both his sense of humor and warm personality.

  • The entertainers which include the hula dancers and fire dancers were truly incredible. They even have a great relaxing hula show at dinner.

Location:

  • Lastly, the location. Nutridge Estate is where this luau is located. It’s a short drive from Waikiki, up a winding mountain to the top. The property itself is gorgeous. There are rolling hills, lush green lawns, and beautiful tall trees all over the property. There is plenty of shade as you enjoy your evening as the sun sets. Facilities are on-site.  Remember, if you’re staying in Waikiki and you’re going to a luau across the island, you’ll be driving back late.

  • There is an incredible view and lookout that I would have missed if I did not book this luau. You do not need to book this luau in order to go to the lookout point but it is a nice bonus to have two things so close together. After the luau, go to the lookout for a breathtaking view over Waikiki and Honolulu. There is a shuttle service to and from Waikiki for an additional cost as well.

Family Friendly:

  • Most luaus are family friendly. Being that this property is secluded and gated, it is very safe for kids. There is a lot of space for kids to take a break and play away from the scheduled activities if you don’t want to bother other guests. It’s very easy to keep your kids entertained throughout the night as the preplanned activities are not drawn out and everything is upbeat and interactive so it will keep everyone’s attention easily. There were also some games before dinner for both adults and kids to try out. We brought out 11 year old and two toddlers (2 and 1 year old) to the show and we all had a great time.

Schedule Overview

Upon arriving at the Nutridge Estate, you first gather as a group and are introduced to the host and entertainers for the evening. Next, you’ll go through a series of preplanned activities which includes the history of Nutridge Estate, how traditional Hawaiian food is prepared, watch some hula dancing, fire knife dancing, a haka, and finally some downtime which allows you to enjoy the property, grab refreshments, and partake in games such as spear throwing.

Before dinner, you’re introduced to the types of foods that you’ll be served that evening, further introducing you to the local cultures and history. During dinner, you’ll have entertainment as well in the form of relaxing hula dancing from the various entertainers throughout your evening.

Final Thoughts

Everyone should experience a luau in an intimate setting at least once when visiting Hawaii. It really gives you a small glimpse into the rich culture and traditions of the Hawaiian people. Generally, most of the luau options are going to be around the same price so make sure you pick the one that fits your schedule and gives you the experience and setting you’re looking for. If you don’t have a rental car and don’t want to take a rideshare to the luau, make sure to check out Experience Nutridge’s shuttle option. The small cost is worth it for the convenience and memories you’ll have here.
